Kibbutz Shomrat was founded
on May 28, 1948

The first name of the kibbutz was "Ha Yotzrim", which was then changed to Shomrat. The name "Shomrat" comes from the Hebrew word "Shomer", the name of a son of Asher, whose tribe settled the area ca.2000 years ago.

The kibbutz is affiliated with the "HaShomer HaTzair" movement. The founders were mainly Holocaust Survivor refugees from Tsjechie, Slowakia, Hungary and Romania. They were joined by Garin members from South America, North America, Canada, and Israeli Ha Shomer HaTzair groups. Over the years the kibbutz expanded with Shomrats sons and daughters.

Kibbutz Shomrat is located in Western-Galilee, on a small hill. To the north Nachal Yesaf , a rainwater stream which flows under the beautiful Ottoman Aqueduct to the Mediterreanean sea and separates between Shomrat and the neighbour kibbutz Lochmei HaGettaot. To the west and the south, close to Shomrat are: The Bahai Gardens which are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, with the shrine of Baha'u'llah , the faith's founder.
